Regrets on the Chilean Sea Bass
Thanks to Marianne, I found out that Chilean Sea Bass I ate at Reza’s is one of the WORST choices for ecology AND my health!!! According to the Environmental Defense Fund, here is why you shouldn’t eat it:
- Marketed as “Chilean sea bass”, toothfish are in severe decline from overfishing.
- Popular with consumers, they fetch premium prices, which have spurred rampant illegal fishing.
- The longlines commonly used to catch Chilean sea bass often snag endangered albatrosses and other seabirds as they grab bait, and the birds end up drowning.
- The fish is high in mercury levels. Adults should eat NO MORE than 2 meals per month!!!
The EDF has a great printable list of BEST & WORST Seafood to buy. Please print one out for yourself here!!!! Here’s also a pocket sushi selector.
Other WORSTS: Grouper, Orange Roughy, Farmed/Atlantic Salmon, Swordfish, Bigeye & Bluefin Tuna
BEST Choises: Artic Char, Oysters, Atlantic Mackerel, Wild Alaskan Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Yellowfin Tuna

Berried Out Oats!
If you love berries, you’ll love this combo!
- 1 Pack original Quaker oats microwaved with 1/2 cup almond milk
- (Hidden) Frozen Pineapples under the yogurt
- 1 Container Raspberry Yogurt (I use Yoplait light)
- 1/2 Banana-mama
- All the berries you like!
- Puffins & Quaker Oatmeal Squares for some crunch
The breakfast didn’t keep me full for too long though. I had an ounce of unsalted almonds (no pic) to hold me over till lunch.

“Is Sour-ish Tofu Safe to Eat?”
I’m not sure if I cooked this too long ago (1 week) or kept it in the fridge for too long, but after I microwaved this lunch, the baked tofu tasted really sour! Is this…normal?
You’re looking at Steamed Asparagus, 4oz baked BBQ tofu, 2 cups sauteed spinach, 1/2 cup Wild Rice from Lundenberg’s microwaveable rices. (I love it!! SO convenient to make and it tastes so nutty! I like it more than brown rice for sure)
This was my dessert! Baked Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles are so yummy! And then a super crisp apple. 🙂 I worked really hard all afternoon and by 5, I busted out some snacks to fuel me for some Kwando!
Chobani with 1 tbs cinnamon & 1 tbs honey (YUMMY!!!), and most of the YOU Trail Mix sample I got in the mail last week. The Youbar guys are adding a customizable trail mix line to their products so you can make your own too!
Stats for “Chocolate Trails”: 220 cals, 13g fat, 4g fiber, 15g sugar, 4g protein
My mini-review: The nuts in there are raw and unsalted, which I appreciate. However, what you see is what you get. You could probably make your own mix at home if you have these ingredients. I do like that it’s portioned already and convenient though!
Anyway, all this powered me through an awesome workout. I SERIOUSLY gave new meaning to “Sweating like a Pig”. Someone even asked me if I just showered when in fact, it was my sweat. hahaha.

I got super-excited for dinner because I’ve been meaning to make pizza for weeks with the bf now!!!
**Cheese-less Pizza 101**
If you’re like me and you LOVE thin crust pizza, yet NOT a fan of the truckloads of cheese piled on top of restaurant pizza’s, AND you like lots ‘n lots of toppings, you will love this!!
Home-baked Veggie Shrimp Cheese-less Pizza!
OK, obviously there’s one slice WITH cheese for the bf. 😛 He ran out of cheese after that one slice. hehe
You will need:
- 1 pack pre-made garlic (or WW) pizza dough from TJ’s
- Fresh Spinach
- 2 cups King Oyster Mushrooms, sliced & sauteed
- 1 Cup frozen peeled shrimp, sauteed with garlic
- 1/2 Onion, sliced & sauteed
- 1/2 jar pasta/tomato sauce
- 1/2 Clove of fresh garlic, minced
Simply, stretch out the dough (I made mine super thin on the inside and crustier on the outside), spread your marinara, arrange all your ingredients on top, and bake for 12-15 minutes! EASY and TASTY!
I tried to retain the hungry beast in me, but it was SO GOOD I had 2 large wedges and finally this last little guy.
Our sides included, Chinese Broccoli boiled & topped with oyster sauce (YUM YUM YUM!!!! My childhood favorite), and a spinach & carrot salad (tossed with EVOO, balsamic, sesame seeds, & seaweed).
Pan-fried Miso-Honey Glazed Salmon, the bf was in charge of this, and despite how delicious it was, the bf loves his oil when he fries fish. Think, greasy lips. mmmmmm
WONDERFUL dinner, WONDERFUL day!!!
MY CHEAP THRILL OF THE DAY: This weekend I helped the bf accomplish something – we found him a new apartment!!! He’ll be living RIGHT beside Navy Pier. It’s farther from me, but it’s got a fabulous view!! So I share this with you..The picture really doesn’t do it justice, but if you stood on his roof, you can look all the way across Lake Michigan! Exciting!!!!! 😛
Hope you’ve all had a great day!!
What was your most recent “cheap thrill”??!
Thanks for the seafood list. That’s really interesting, and I will make sure to choose the right kinds of dishes from now on!
That’s sweet that the bf is living near Navy Pier…mostly because that’s one of the few places I can identify in Chicago. (Thank goodness for ferris wheels.) I will totally come find his apartment and recreate my video awesome-ness until he comes outside and helps me locate you. Okay, plan!
thank god salmon is ok!
Oh wow, everything looks delicious! Pizza looks amazing!
Thanks for the shout out on my “fish rant”. I’m going to be totally anal, but I wish they would write Wild Pacific Salmon, and not Alaskan, because the stuff caught in BC is just as good as the Alaskan caught catch (I know, I’m such a fish nerd). Pacific Halibut and Lingcod are also good choices, if you can get them.
You pizza looks excellent…but I would still probably add the cheese 😉
i’m the opposite when it comes to pizza- i like thick crust and lots and lots of cheese, i will admit yours looks yummy though 🙂 and HELLO awesome view! i’d love to be greeted with that everyday- lucky bf!
What a gorgeous view! I love cheeseless pizza-more room for other fun toppings.
Uh oh, I think I buy Atlantic salmon 😦
Speaking of salmon, do you think you could post the recipe for that miso honey salmon your bf made?! Looks so delicious!
I don’t know about sour tofu, but I know that it takes quite a while for tofu to go bad. I’m sure you’re fine. Maybe it absorbed a funky smell in the fridge.
great info about what to buy and not to buy of the seafood, I really need this info since I buy them pretty often.
sour tofu?? mmmm….that’s a sign that it’s bad.. I hope your belly doesn’t complain.
cheeseless pizza???? hahaha….. that reminds me pizza hut in China, they have so many varieties with chinese dishes in pizza…I always thought awkward, but I guess it’s tasty!
great job with apartment hunting…. that’s an amazing view!!! 🙂
great pizza recipe!!!!
yikes, even though i knew that chilean sea bass isn’t environmentally sustainable, i had no idea that it’s high in mercury levels. gone-off tofu does turn sour … hope ur tummy ain’t grumbling much @___@.
i came across ur blog last week and am really enjoying ur posts. btw, i’m also from HK but studied at uc berkeley for college. heh heh, reading ur blog makes me reminisce life in the US.
navy pier! can i come visit and stare out your boyf’s window the whole time?? haha he’s a lucky man to be living there 😉 that pizza looks DELICIOUS! I have GOT to get myself over and buy some WW dough for those purposes alone 🙂 stay cool girl.
You are the queen of colourful oats! I love your berry breakfast – looks beautiful! Your pizza looks great… but I admit, I like cheese on mine. I love cheese. In fact, I’ll just eat the cheese. I don’t need the rest of the pizza… (yes, I have a problem).
ah i had sourish tofu once too. my mom said it was fine to eat but it tasted nasty. dont you just hate thatttt
what the heck. i’ve been eating so much chilean sea bass lately. why has nobody told me? now i’m gonna die…
ohh didn’t realize that was a bad choice… yikes! I love fish though so i’ll have to check out the list to make better eco friendly choices
I didn’t realize that the YOU company makes trail mix! FUN! Right by Navy Pier?! Score!!
Thanks for the link on the good/bad fish choices!!!
Your pizza looks great and maybe one day I’ll get lucky enough to try some Chobani!
Thanks for the fish information! I will be sure to only eat the “good list.” Love your pizza! I have been dying to make a nice homeade pizza so I will use your advice soon! Pretty view from bf’s apt!!
Those berry oats look fabu!
really interesting info 😀 How fun about the new apartment, my cousin JUST moved to chicago for school and I can’t wait to go visit her! I ‘ll have to use all your restaurant reviews!
Your berry oats look so good!
And I love cheese on my pizza but ours looks so good I might not miss it!
Your pizza looks awesome. Cheeseless is the way to go!
I am so glad you had a wonderful day! All the eats look lovely, as usual.

It all looks so delish! Latest cheap thrill?! Cereal! 😀 haha
That pizza looks fabulous! My most recent thrill was a free one – Ferraro chocolates sent me samples in the mail!

Yummy! Your pizza and your salmon look sooooo tasty!
Pizza looks delicious!!
That cheese-less pizza looks so damn good!!!!!
Amazing eats! And yay for the cheeseless pizza. Since I want to be vegan (but slip up sometimes) I make pizza without cheese all the time. I really don’t mind it, I think it’s just as good without cheese. And your berry breakfast is so pretty!!
That pizza looks so good!! And I’m loving the “berried out oats” too!
My latest cheap thrill was probably walking around tiffany’s the other weekend….if only I cared to spend THAT much money on some diamond ring! 😉
I always say, “when in doubt, throw it out.” Better to be safe than sorry.
Love the bf’s new apartment location! What a great view. I really miss Chicago!
I’m still a tofu Newbee but I’m thinken sour = not good 🙂
I use to think I couldn’t live without cheese but I gave it up during clean week and now I rarely want it any more! I really love tomato sauce and want to taste it and tons of fresh veggies on pizza.
Did I mentioned that I’m excited I won the salsa/sauces???ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
