Michelle says, Almost higher in protein than greek yogurt and enriched with fiber, Better Whey seems to have it all! Sadly, the slightly higher calorie count (than Greek yogurt) and the fermented sour flavor from the whey makes this less of a delicious treat than other yogurts I’ve tried.

Better Why Ingredients: Cultured Pasteurized Grade A nonfat milk, Whey protein concentrate, Inulin, Natural Corn Starch, Kosher Gelatin, Pectin, 4 live active cultures

Whey Protein

Not all proteins are created equal. Whey protein is a high quality protein that is easier to digest by the body and can be used more effectively than protein from animal products! You may have used Whey Protein in powder form for smoothies, and it definitely takes a while to get used to the grainy texture, but not this.  The yogurt is smooth and creamy.

Better whey isn’t sweet
It has 30% less sugar than most commercial yogurts using natural cane sugar and inulin, a soluble fiber found in plant foods that happen to be sweet tasting. The yogurt is tart and not sweet at all, so don’t expect it!

Stay regular.
Unlike most other yogurts (including Greek), there’s fiber (~3g per container) in Better Why yogurts! Along with the inulin for healthy gut bacteria and probiotic fiber it has live and active cultures from S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus and Bifidus.

Who is Better Whey of Life for?
Better whey has a super-high protein count and would be great for a post work-out snack to rebuild muscle. That being said, you would have to be willing to look past the “interesting” taste…

This yogurt comes in 6oz. cups: plain, Acai Mixed Berry, Peach Mango, Strawberry Banana, and French Vanilla.

I’ve put together a handy dandy table to compare plain greek yogurt with plain Better Whey Yogurt. Take note of the higher fiber count in Whey yogurt, but it’s still 1g less of protein, 30 calories extra and 10g  more of carbs than Greek.

Taste: Whey yogurt has a strangely fermented sour flavor that isn’t like your average plain yogurts. It is definitely not sweet, which is a good thing I suppose, but honestly if it wasn’t for the fruit and the add-ins, I couldn’t finish this yogurt plain. I’m not a fan of the fermented flavor and will definitely buy a flavored cup next time!

Texture: I hear whey protein can be grainy, but definitely not this yogurt! It was smooth and creamy but not liquidy or watery. It actually came out as a glop when I dumped it on the fruit, but it did mesh well with the cereal!

Overall: 6/10. I can’t stand the flavor…I don’t know what it is, can’t put my finger on it, but it’s probably because I’m not used to the way whey tastes. I DO like the added fiber in it along with the high protein count. It was a satisfying breakfast and very filling for sure.

Peach Mango

Taste: This is definitely my favorite flavor out of 3 (see French Vanilla and plain). It isn’t half as tart as the plain, nor does it have an interesting after-taste the vanilla had. Instead, I tasted tropical paradise in my mouth and a balance between the peach and mango flavors.

Texture: Not as blobby as the plain, this has a regular yogurt texture much like Dannon non-fat. It isn’t as thick as the Yoplaits, or the Greek yogurts, but sometimes a girl’s gotta have high-protein yogurt that isn’t as thick as cream cheese!

Verdict: 9/10. Flavor is an A, and I would gladly eat this over the plain though it has an extra 15 calories. When I want my regular not-so-thick yogurt fix, but still stay satiated with the great protein count (15g!!!), I will definitely buy this again!
