After having consumed all Puffin flavors of the Barbar’s Bakery PUFFIN line (yes, on my own dime), I have come to a conclusion that: All puffins are not made equal! (Though all puffins ARE created wheat-free!)
If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth it to try all 5 flavors of puffins, these reviews should be perfect for you!
Did you know that Barbara’s Bakery was actually a real bakery started by a 17-year old Barbara back in 1971?? Today, the famous company continues to carry on Barbara’s commitment to create the best-tasting organic and natural products free and clear of artificial preservatives, artificial ingredients, hydrogenated oils, or refined white sugar.
My personal order of favorite flavors:
#1) Multi-grain (I love!)
#2) Peanut Butter
#3) Cinnamon
#4) Original & Honey Rice (Tied for last place! You have better choices dude.)
Let the Reviews Begin.
Multi-grain Puffins – 100% natural whole oats, brown rice and corn.
Ingredients: Corn Flour, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Brown Rice Flour, Whole Oat Flour, Fructan (NutraFlora® Natural Dietary Fiber), Oat Hull Fiber, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Flavor, Baking Soda, Natural Caramel Color, Sea Salt, Ascorbic Acid, Iron, Annatto, Vitamin D, Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols [Soy]).
Tastiness: 9/10. Tear open the box and you are greeted with 4 different colored and sizes of puffins. They each have their unique flavor, but delicious in its own way. I love that these don’t get as large as the peanut butter puffins, but aren’t dry and bland like the original. They are a little powdery on the outside, crunchy, and hold up perfectly in whatever milk you want to soak them in. This is an addictive blend of puffins and doesn’t require any additional mix-ins! (Yes I’m talking to you cereal mixers out there like me!)
Peanut butter Puffins
Ingredients: Corn Meal, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Natural Peanut Butter (Ground Peanuts, Salt), Oat Flour, Rice Flour, Sea Salt, Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols [Soy] Added to Maintain Freshness), Baking Soda.
Tastiness: 8.5/10. My second favorite Puffin flavor, these PB puffins can pass as a dry snack (without milk) thanks to the sweet, rich, ultra peanutty flavor baked into every piece of cereal. (PB lovers heaven!) They’re very powdery and the outsides are coated with a film of what appears to be dried but smooth peanut butter. The cereal itself is ultra crunchy because of the cornmeal “walls”, while the inside is hollow. The cereal itself is rather large and bulky, sadly, the calories add up too quickly with these guys. They have a hard time soaking into the milk on its own, so I like to mash ‘em up a little and eat them with milk so they’re not as dry. Overall, ultra flavorful, crunchy, but yes a tad too big and on the dry-side.
Original Puffins
Ingredients: Yellow Corn Flour, Corn Bran Flour, Unsulphured Molasses, Oat Flour, Expeller Pressed High Oleic Oil (Canola and/or Sunflower), Salt, Baking Soda, Natural Vitamn E (Mixed Tocopherols [Soy] Added To Maintain Freshness), Vitamin C.
Tastiness: 6.5/10. Sorry original lovers, but despite how light and crispy these Puffins are, I can’t get over the bitter aftertaste. The original puffins are the smallest in size and have ultra thin, crisp “walls” and a hollow interior. While the cereal is lightly sweetened, it doesn’t make your milk sweet, and it has an unfortunate bitter aftertaste. If you can ignore that, this is a great healthy, light-flavored cereal with a great crunch to it. I just wish it had more flavor.
Cinnamon Puffins
Tastiness: 7.5/10. These cinnamon puffins didn’t quite meet my expectation. They are built very much like the original puffins – so, not powdery in texture, more dry, and smaller in size – and hence have the same light crunch. The cinnamon coating addition is what elevates the flavor of the cereal, which will successfully flavor your milk (though not as excessively as I would like)! They are sweet, but not overly so, and definitely a tastier, more flavorful choice over the original flavor to me!
Honey Rice Puffins
Ingredients: Wholegrain Brown Rice Flour, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Rice Bran, Honey, Expeller Pressed High Oleic Oil (Canola and/or Sunflower), Sea Salt, Natural Flavor, Natural Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols [Soy] Added To Maintain Freshness).
Tastiness: 6.5/10. I thought I would fall in love with this flavor, but unfortunately its slightly bitter aftertaste makes this one cereal not to be devoured dry. These puffins are medium in size and very powdery. They soak up milk better than the PB flavor and I did learn to enjoy it when I ate it with sweetened hazelnut milk. The honey flavor was extremely faint, but what I found to be the dominant taste was actually an almond extract-like flavor…and of course ends with some bitterness. I wouldn’t buy this cereal again if I could get any of the other sweet ones!

P.s. As a hint, I always buy my puffins from Trader Joe’s because they stock the larger boxes of puffins for a lower price than the smaller boxes at Whole Foods or other grocery stores. The catch is that they don’t have ALL flavors! (BOO)
Updated to add: Check out this cool giveaway at Bake it After All!!
I went through a PB Puffins addiction last fall, but I’ve never tried the multi-grain. In fact, I don’t think I’ve even seen it in stores! Hmm…I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for that little bird. Thanks for the reviews!
ooooo i have to try the multi grain!!
I’ll need to try the multi grain. I used to like the peanut butter, but didn’t eat them much because they aren’t whole grain so after a few times I’d let them go and the box got stale 😦
I have to check out the multi-grain ones! The honey rice ones definitely have an aftertaste
I think you wrote this post specifically for me but didn’t know it! I’ve been eating Original Puffins forever, and just thought to myself this morning that I’d like to branch out when I go to the grocery store today!
MMM I love Puffins. I went through a whole box of Cinnamon this weekend! Oops!!
i really had no idea there were so many different puffins. barb’s shredded spoonfuls have my heart, but i do want to try the cinnamon puffins!
PB puffins are the best. My sis and I back in the day would go crazy with these.
I LOVE Puffins! I usually buy the cinnamon because I know PB would last MAYBE 2 days in my house. 🙂 And I get them at TJ’s, too – love that they are cheaper there!
I’ve never seen/heard of/eaten the multi-grain! I must find some now that you give them your highest praise! I have a weakness for puffins of all varieties, especially the peanut butter ones, they usually don’t last more than a few days in my sight.
My old boss used to eat Puffins every day so I picked up a box years ago to try.. I think peanut butter? Ugh, they were horrible! Tasted like cardboard to me, w/ an odd aftertaste. I haven’t eaten them since and that was like 3 yrs ago!
The peanut butter ones are like crack to me – it’s hard to stop at a serving! And I usually ate them as a snack with no milk. Happy Monday!
oooh those multi-grain ones sound good! never tried them before.
I like this name!! puffin!! just like what it looks like. have you every try the peanut butter captain crunch?! that’s my favorite breakfast cereal – shhhh I know its very childish !
i love putting my puffins in yogurt, yum!
Thanks for the reviews! I love putting puffins in greek yog. messes!
❤ jess

I haven’t seen some of those flavors, my favorites are peanut butter and cinnamon mmm I think they are great for a snack 🙂
Ah, music to my eyes! I grew up on Puffins and Barbara’s Shredded Wheat. SO good.
I don’t know if I’ve ever had Puffins?! Can you believe? But the next time I need to go to Trader Joe’s, I’m printing out your review so I know which kind to buy! They all look so good and I’m definitely a cereal monster. I think I would try the PB ones first. I’m glad they are #2 on your list!
I love Puffins! Yum!!
i’m obsessed with puffins. when i eat the pb ones i just pop one in my mouth and let the pb dissolve, then i proceed with chewing. that is such a weird thing to share, i don’t know why i just typed that. oh well!! HELLA tasty, lol
PB puffins are one of my fave – i wasn’t crazy about the cinnamon ones. have never tried the multi grain!
Man, I haven’t had Puffins in ages. So pricey per box, and they hardly go on really good sale here. I didn’t know there were multigrain or honey rice ones though – we don’t have those up here that I’ve seen. I like the original though – I don’t find they have any bitter aftertaste, and I am so not a bitter taste fan.
You make me crave Puffins now and we don’t even have them over here! Boooh!
Thank you so much for your comment on my blog! 🙂 I’m so excited about these new Puffins flavors – I love the multi-grain puffins, and I’m looking forward to trying the Peanut Butter ones! Thank you for introducing me to PB Puffins! 🙂
all puffins are not made equal that totally cracked me up! I’ve only had one box ever due to their high price and never any good sales
so glad you found my blog! yay for dantats!! it’s so cool that you grew up in HK! my boyfriend is there right now, actually. i’ve only had the pb puffins, but i am totally addicted, so i can’t have them around the house. i know what you mean when you say they are large and can easily add up in calories – i can polish the box off in 2 sittings. interesting to know that the multigrain puffins are smaller, though. thanks for reviewing all of the flavors! (it’s a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it! :D)
Thanks for the review on these–I haven’t bought any because number one, I’d eat em all at once, and number two they are SO dang expensive 😦
oooh thanks for reviewing all of these! i only really buy the PB ones and even those i havent bought in forever but mostly because i am literally addicted once i open the box and cant stop eating 🙂
Those all look so tasty! I still haven’t been to Trader Joes, and I definitely feel a road trip to food coming on.
i didn’t even realize that barb had multigrain puffins!! if they’re better than the pb then they must be stellar! thanks for the great review girl 🙂 you never fail me.
i’m definitely gonna keep my eyes peeled for those multigrain ones! although i have a feeling they would be tremendously dangerous..
I like puffins a lot. BUT, I don’t get them anymore because I will eat them all (well, duh). But what I mean is…I will finish the whole box after buying it, from the drive from the store to my house, it is all GONE. haha horrible horrible
I haven’t tried the multigrain or the honey rice…….but I don’t care for the cinnamon! PB and corn are my favs!!
so glad you play with sharpies just as much as I do 🙂
You should try the chocolate and PB variety. They are smaller then the large PB kind, so you might like them even more. Although, the are harder to find.
